Academy of Alumni & Friends Dental Fall Weekend: Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

Course Title

Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ): Update on Diagnosis and Patient Management for the Clinician

Course Description

During this scientific activity we will update dental clinicians on osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). This oral complication affecting patients with osteoporosis or cancer patients who develop bone metastasis is associated with medications used to treat these patient populations. The uncertainty about how patients with ONJ will respond to therapy might cause delay of treatment or even leave the patient without treatment alternatives that are acceptable and can improve quality of life. The goal of this presentation is to share my clinical experience in diagnosing this condition and managing patients since ONJ was first reported to the literature.

Course Objectives

  • Become familiar with the current definition of ONJ from the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
  • Learn ways to diagnosis ONJ
  • Learn ways to manage:
