Modern Extraction Techniques and Ridge Preservation in Fresh Cadavers

New Course

Atrophy of alveolar ridges following tooth extraction is a common fact and can severely compromise the esthetic and functional rehabilitation of patients. Preservation of the alveolar ridge has become the standard of care and a necessity for the successful contemporary clinician. Numerous options of biomaterials and surgical techniques can often be overwhelming for the clinician and can lead to improper clinical management.

Course Description

This course is designed to teach the general dentist and specialists how to effectively and predictably maintain the dimensions of the alveolar ridge following tooth extractions. A unique feature of this course is the use of fresh frozen cadaver heads for practicing atraumatic extraction and surgical techniques for hard and soft tissue preservation following extractions. At the end of the course the participants should have the ability to correctly plan and effectively utilize various surgical extraction ridge preservation techniques.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Perform modern techniques of tooth extraction
  • Understand the benefits and rationale for socket preservation
  • Understand how the biologic events during healing of the extraction socket relate to the socket preservation concepts
  • Understand the role of different biomaterials on socket preservation techniques
  • Understand the differences between socket preservation and ridge augmentation procedures
  • Understand and apply basic surgical concepts related to socket preservation procedures



This session focuses on the didactic knowledge needed for management of extraction sockets. Topics include biologic principles of healing of extraction sockets, rational for socket preservation, socket preservation versus ridge augmentation, properties of biomaterials and results that can be achieved, surgical techniques available for socket preservation, and surgical techniques available for ridge augmentation following extractions.


This session is a hands-on session on cadaver heads. The participants will practice minimally traumatic exodontia, management and placement of bone grafting materials, management and placement of barrier membranes, flap management and suturing for socket preservation and ridge augmentation, harvest and placement of free and connective tissue gingival grafts associated with socket preservation procedures.


  • 8:00-9:00 – Biologic principles, rationale and indications for socket preservation procedures
  • 9:00-10:00 – Biomaterial properties and selection for ridge preservation procedures
  • 10:00-10:30 – Break
  • 10:30-11:30 PM – Soft tissue management for ridge preservation procedures: Flap management and soft tissue grafting principles
  • 11:30-12:30 PM – Minimally Traumatic Exodontia
  • 12:30-1:30 PM – Lunch
  • 1:30-5:00 – Hands-on exercises for ridge preservation procedures on cadaver heads
