Collaborative Healthcare for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

Course Description:

Dental professionals are expected to care for patients with different needs and abilities across the lifespan. Dentists will learn how to meet the treatment needs for persons with intellectual disabilities in a collaborative incremental care model. We will review effective practice management strategies for successful delivery of treatment in a health team approach.  The principles of collaborative care patient management, oral health prevention and necessary accommodations across the lifespan are emphasized.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the fundamentals of dental evaluation, treatment planning, and management of patients with intellectual disability in a disability friendly environment. 
  2. Perform an inter-disciplinary oral and overall health team assessment of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) that exhibit challenging behaviors. 
  3. Recognize the inter-professional interaction with physicians, behavioral specialists, nurses and therapists in collaborative care planning and treatment sequencing for adults with I/DD. 
  4. Discuss the behavioral challenges detrimental to oral health and strategies with families of people with intellectual disabilities.

Meet the Speaker: David Fray DDS, MBA

David Fray DDS, MBA graduated with a DDS from UTSD Houston in 1979 and received his MBA with an emphasis in Healthcare administration from Oklahoma City University in 1997.  Dr. Fray as a professor at UTHealth School of Dentistry, Department of General Practice and Dental Public Health teaches Special Needs, Geriatrics and Practice Management.  He served for 16 years as a public health administrator in two States as Developmental Disabilities Director after 15 years of a private dental practice with an emphasis on geriatric and adult special needs care.  He is board certified in Long-Term Care from the National Association of Boards and is a licensed Long-Term Care Administrator.   He is a Past President of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) currently serving as Vice President of Education on the AADMD Board.  Dr. Fray serves as a board member of the Special Care Dentistry Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities.  His area of research and teaching focuses upon community-based prevention and systems change to eliminate oral health disparities for vulnerable populations through Interprofessional Collaborative care models.
