This clerkship is designed as a two-day or one-week participation course involving the activities of the Oral Medicine Clinic at the University of Florida Health Science Center. Experiences include observation in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with various benign entities of the oral cavity, head and neck cancer, and oral complications secondary to cancer therapy. Other available activities include attendance at special Health Science Center conferences or lectures.

An audio-visual library containing a large volume of materials related to oral oncology, diagnosis, medicine and therapeutics will be available to the participant for self-paced study, if time permits. The instructors will attempt to tailor the clerkship to meet the individual participant’s interests or needs.

Objectives

At completion, the participant will be updated on:

  • Diagnosis & treatment of patients with benign or malignant lesions of the head and neck
  • Pre-therapy oral evaluation for patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy, chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation
  • Diagnosis and management of oral complications secondary to cancer therapy

Instruction

Instruction will be provided by the faculty in the Oral Medicine Clinic and, if time permits, through auto-tutorial materials in the Clinic’s Audiovisual Library. Participants will accompany faculty to observe patient diagnosis and treatment in the Oral Medicine Clinic, the Health Science Center and to attend conferences or lectures when available.

Schedule

One-Week and Two-Day program to be custom scheduled by participant and faculty.

One-Week: Check-in and Orientation will occur in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Diagnostic Sciences, Room D1-18 of the College of Dentistry. The course is offered on a year-round basis approximately 45 weeks each year.
Dates of attendance are custom scheduled and flexible, (8:00 am – 5:00 pm)

Two-Day: The course will begin at 8:00 am and end at 5:00 pm on each day.  The days of the week for participation are to be determined based on the availability of the instructors and the participant, however Wednesday-Thursday or Thursday-Friday are preferred.

A certificate of completion is awarded upon completion of this course and specifies the type, the number of hours, and the length of training.
