Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Training

Description

In partnership with the Florida Department of Health, this comprehensive program, led by the University of Florida College of Dentistry, equips dental professionals with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to deliver personalized, ethical, and inclusive care to patients with disabilities. Through interactive case studies and hands-on workshops, participants will apply real-world treatment strategies while gaining insight into the behavioral management continuum, including techniques for addressing uncooperative behavior using tailored approaches and sensory tools. The course emphasizes individualized treatment planning by integrating medical, dental, and behavioral considerations for patients with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other craniofacial syndromes. Participants will also explore advanced care strategies, including sedation, protective stabilization, and tele-dentistry, to improve access and outcomes for underserved populations. With a strong focus on caregiver collaboration, the program highlights effective communication, informed consent, and the role of caregivers as essential partners in delivering high-quality, prevention-focused, and long-term patient care.
