Course Description:

This course focuses on understanding medical consults for the dental management as well as dental consults for the medical management of medically complex patients. It addresses the Who, Why, When, What and How of such instances. Specific examples include: patients needing invasive dental treatments while on anti-coagulants/with poorly controlled hypertension/prior head and neck radiation treatment for cancer/prior to or while on anti-resorptive treatment for osteoporosis or bone-metastatic cancer/prior to autologous stem cell transplant.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand dental considerations and management for medically complex patients•
  2. Understand what interdisciplinary care for patients entails and comprehend the role of the dentist in the optimal management of patients with head and neck cancer or bone-metastatic cancer, treated with anti-resorptive therapy, or dental implications for patients referred for ‘dental clearance’ prior to medical treatments•
  3. Understand the need for and strategies available to mitigate risk for complications such as Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) or osteoradionecrosis (ORN)

Meet the Speakers: Dr. Gayathri Subramanian & Dr. Samuel Quek

Gayathri Subramanian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnostic SciencesRutgers School of Dental Medicine. As a general dentist, she provides comprehensive dental care in all phases of dentistry. Her interest lies in the assessment and dental management of medically complex cases including patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer, patients with chronic illnesses including diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), liver or kidney diseases etc. Helping patients manage their dental anxiety, enabling them to receive the required treatment. Samuel Y. P. Quek is a Professor and Attending in the General Practice Residency Program at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, I have vast experience in facilitating the dental management of medically complex patients. I routinely collaborate with Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists and ENT surgeons at the University Hospital (UH), Newark NJ, in the management of patients with head and neck cancers. As part of Hospital Dentistry under Dental Medicine, UH, we also facilitate the management of dental patients with chronic illnesses to successfully undergo their planned dental treatment.
