Office Emergencies for the Dental Team


Course Description

This course is designed for the dental team: Doctor, Assistants and Front Office Staff. The primary goal is to provide structure and didactic knowledge for team organization during office emergencies. It consists of 3 didactic lectures, a series of case studies and a hands on skills lab with simulations.


Course Objectives

Office Based Emergencies: Organization of the Team:

  • Understand the importance of planning for medical emergencies in the dental/oral surgical office.
  • Define the role of each member of the team.
  • Find a source of Emergency Based Scenarios so as to practice with the team.
  • Organize the emergency cart and supplies.
  • Identify adjuncts with which to better prepare and equip the emergency cart.


Medical Risk Assessment for the General Practice Provider:

  • Complete a systematic review of the major organ systems of the body.
  • Understand the most common conditions that affect these organ systems.
  • Prepare for potential medical emergencies that are seen in the dental office.


Review of Common Emergencies and Approach to Management:

  • Vasopressor Syncope
  • Hyperventilation
  • Angina / Myocardial Infarction
  • Respiratory/Airway Emergencies- asthma, bronchospasm, laryngospasm
  • Allergic reactions – anaphylaxis, mild- delayed
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • Cardiac Emergencies
