Safe Controlled Substance Prescribing

(MATE Act)

Description

In the process of safe prescribing of controlled substances, it is important to understand the options available to the practitioner to control perioperative pain. This course will specifically focus on 1) Proper use of local anesthetics- classes, doses, metabolism, etc, 2) Pharmacology and MOA of analgesics used in managing of acute dental pain 3) Evaluation of the intended role of opioid and non-opioid analgesics, 4) Best practices for prescribing analgesics 5) Identification for the potential of opioid addiction and treatment thereof.

Objectives

By the end of the lecture the participant will be:

  • familiar with the use of local anesthetics to control perioperative pain
  • familiar with the need for opioid vs non-opioid analgesic alternatives
  • familiar with the pharmacology and MOA of analgesics in the acute dental pain setting
  • able to describe Best Practices for use of analgesics and the ability to identify the potential for opioid misuse, addiction and treatment
