Practical Insights Regarding Autism in Children and Teens

Description

Children with autism spectrum disorders face special challenges cooperating with dental care and carrying out dental self-care.

This half-day workshop for dentists aims to provide a concise, useful summary of Autism Spectrum Disorder, with attention to emotional, sensory, communication, and interactional challenges experienced by many children on the autism spectrum. The workshop will combine a didactic presentation and a number of short break-out exercises

Objectives

Attendees will be able to:

  • Increase awareness about how autism may affect a child’s thinking, social interactions, emotions, and sensory experience.
  • Review ways that autism may affect an autistic child’s experience of dental care and patient self-care.
  • Examine professional approaches to autistic youth that have the potential to increase cooperation and follow-up.
