Course Description

According to the US Census Bureau, approximately 1 out of 5 Americans have a disability. Providing oral health care to individuals with disabilities may require modifications to the types of treatment rendered and the way it is delivered. This course is targeted toward dental health providers looking to increase their ability to deliver dental care to individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (ID/DD), acquired disabilities, and other special healthcare needs.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe common intellectual and developmental disabilities that individuals may present with in the dental office
  • Discuss common legal and ethical questions related to treating individuals with special healthcare needs
  • Identify strategies and modifications to dental treatment options and dental treatment delivery for individuals with special needs

Faculty

Dr. Mai-Ly Duong received her Doctor of Dental Medicine and Masters in Public Health degrees from A.T. Still University in 2012. Following dental school, she completed a certificate program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry from NYU Langone Medical Center. She then earned a Masters in Education degree with a dental emphasis from the University of the Pacific. Dr. Duong is an Associate Professor at Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health in The Center for Advanced Oral Health where she works to support students, residents, and faculty treating individuals with special needs and complex medical conditions. She also works as an associate dentist in private practice. Dr. Duong’s many accomplishments and contributions to the dental profession have earned her recognition with a Mastership of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD) and Fellowships in the Special Care Dentistry Association (FSCD), the American College of Dentists (FACD), the International College of Dentists (FICD), and the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA). She has a passion for serving vulnerable populations such as those with special needs and older adults.

WEBINAR CANCELLATION POLICY: Full refunds will be issued to registrants who cancel their registration no later than 48 hours before the course starting date/time. A 50% refund will be issued to registrants who cancel 48-24 hours before the course starting date/time. No refunds will be issued for registrants who does not login to the webinar or who cancels within 24 hours of the course starting date/time. Participants may phone the Continuing Education office to cancel, but a written request which includes the name and phone number of the person who paid for the course must be received by our office before a refund can be processed. This request can be emailed to ce@dental.ufl.edu.
