Restorative Functions for Dental Auxiliary
Certification Course

A 105-hour certification course.

This course is approved for certification and training in Restorative Functions for dental auxiliaries, as outlined in Board of Dentistry Rules 64B5-16.0051 and 64B6-16.0061.


Description

This 5-month course provides the theoretical background for the pre-clinical operative technique course in the primary and adult dentitions.  Students receive instruction on a range of skills necessary before beginning work on patient simulators (manikins) and then progress to clinical scenarios.  The material will be presented in various formats, including lecture, laboratory, web-based, patient care, and self-study formats.

Certificates will be awarded upon demonstration of competency and satisfactory completion of written and clinical post-tests.


Acceptance Criteria and Requirements Before The Course

Dental Assistants Must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be able to read, write, and speak English at an advanced level.
  • Be a high school graduate or have a High School Equivalency Certificate.
  • Have a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certificate.
  • Be a graduate of a dental assisting program that is accredited by a dental accrediting entity recognized by the United States Department of Education, or have received formal training in expanded duties.
  • Never had a dental assisting license suspended or revoked in any jurisdiction.
  • Within 24 months prior to being admitted to the mandatory training course, the Candidate must have documented proof of 2400 hours of clinical work experience in either a dental office or as an educator of dental assisting.

Dental Hygienists Must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be able to read, write, and speak English at an advanced level.
  • Be a high school graduate or have a High School Equivalency Certificate.
  • Have a current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certificate.
  • Have an unrestricted dental hygiene license from any U.S. state or territory.
  • Never had a dental hygiene license suspended or revoked in any jurisdiction.
  • Within 24 months prior to being admitted to the mandatory training course, the candidate must have documented proof of 2400 hours of clinical work experience in either A dental office, as an educator of a dental hygiene program, or be a graduate of a dental hygiene program, accredited by a dental accrediting entity recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Objectives

To provide training for certification in the following restorative functions:

  • Know the classifications of cavity preparation design.
  • Understand the principles of restorations in the primary and permanent dentition.
  • Understand the principles of stainless-steel crown (SSC) restorations and how to fit, adjust, and cement SSC.
  • Understand the principles of pulp protection for deep lesions (bases and liners)
  • Understand different types of current adhesive materials and their indications.
  • Learn different treatment options with adhesive restorations for Class I, II, III, IV, and V (manipulation, protocols, and polymerization)
  • Learn how to manipulate and restore teeth with amalgam for Class I, II, and V.
  • Learn how to place Resin Modified Glass Ionomer restoration in Class V and protective restorations.

All necessary supplies and instruments will be provided. However, please bring your own safety glasses or loupes if you need special glasses.

This is a five-month course consisting of one session per month.
Attendance at all sessions is required to earn certification.
Note: Hours for Session 5 (Clinical) may vary.

Tuition

Summer & Fall 2025: one full payment of $6,999 or two payments of $3,699.50

Spring & Summer 2026: one full payment of $7,200 or two payments of $3,800

Full Payment: Due two months prior to Session 1

Two-Payment Plan:
First Installment (Sessions 1–3): Due two months prior to Session 1
Second Installment (Sessions 4–5): Due two weeks prior to Session 4
